Germany’s First Annual National Brain Bee Competition

2011 marks the First Annual Competition here in Germany, being held on Saturday, June 18th, at the University of Heidelberg. The First Place Winner will represent the country at the 2011 International Brain Bee in July in Florence, Italy.

The Brain Bee, established 1998, is a live question and answer neuroscience competition that is designed to teach students about our most powerful computing machine- the brain. Currently, there are nearly 150 local Brain Bees around the world. Students learn about such topics as brain cognition and function, the senses, diseases, physiology, genetics, and neural cell biology. Students study a publication from the International Brain Research Organization, Neuroscience of the Brain, a 60-page booklet written for young students. During the breaks, students will have the opportunity to talk with professors and graduate students in the medical and neuroscience fields over drinks and snacks. The 1st place winner will represent Germany at the 2011 International Brain Bee, held July 16th in Florence, Italy, as part of the International Brain Research Organization’s 8th World Congress, where the National Brain Bee Champions will be recognized in front of the tens of thousands of neuroscientists during the Opening Ceremony. In addition to free attendance to the conference (290€), the student and one parent will each receive 300€ for a roundtrip flight to Florence and 400€ to apply toward hotel costs. The winner will also receive a 100€ gift certificate to Amazon and a competition trophy. 2nd place prize is a 50€ gift certificate. 3rd – 5th place prize is a 10€ gift certificate. All students will be awarded an event t-shirt, University of Heidelberg souvenirs, and a Certificate of Participation.
