Research interests

Differential cell growth enables plants to adapt their developmental program to the prevailing metabolic and environmental conditions. Cell expansion involves processes and forces acting in different cellular compartments including vacuole, Golgi, plasma membrane and apoplast. A key question in plant biology is how coordination of the individual components is achieved and how growth is controlled by regulatory networks. Based on the initial observation that the vacuolar H+-ATPase  (V-ATPase), a highly conserved eukaryotic proton-pump, is limiting for cell expansion, we have developed our current projects with the goal to establish a complete picture of V-ATPase-dependent ion homeostasis, metabolite compartmentation and gene expression. Moreover, we are focused on understanding regulatory mechanisms that control V-ATPase activity and have a profound interest in pH-dependent vesicle trafficking and calcium signalling.
